Finding Joy In Being Single

Updated: Apr 24, 2023

There's something to be said about being single, whether it's by choice or not. It gives you the freedom to do as you please when you please and with whomever, you please (or not). Being single allows you to focus on yourself, your goals, and your ambitions. And yes, there are times when that can get lonely—but it doesn't have to!

DON'T wait until you're in a relationship to experience joy.

One of the biggest mistakes single people make is waiting for someone else to make them happy.

This can take many forms, but one of the most common is waiting for an external circumstance to change before you can be happy.

You might think that once you get married or find the right relationship then your life will be perfect and all your problems will disappear.

When this doesn't happen, then you fall into depression because none of your dreams come true like they were supposed to!

Find a new hobby or re-engage with an old one.

  • Find a new hobby or re-engage with an old one.

  • Try something you used to do when you were younger, like playing the piano or learning how to knit. You might even want to start taking dance lessons again!

  • Try something that involves your kids, like going bowling or making homemade popsicles together. They'll love it and so will you!

  • Maybe there are some things that only you can do. For example: what about taking up rock climbing for the first time in your life? No one else has done it before—that's what makes it exciting!

Make the most of your weekends.

If you're single and in your 40s, the weekends are supposed to be some of the best times of your week. You might think that sleeping in and going out to eat is all you have time for, but there are actually a lot of other things you can do with your free time that will make it feel more like an adventure. If you've just moved into a new city or if it's been a while since you've gone out on a date, try these things:

  • Go somewhere new! Maybe the last time someone took you out was when they were trying to impress their boss or parents so they took them somewhere fancy where they had no idea what was being served anyway. This time around though take charge by picking out an interesting restaurant yourself (maybe something with good reviews about local ingredients). Or pick up tickets on Groupon for an art museum; museums often offer discounts when buying tickets online beforehand so check before heading over there! Don't forget about nearby nature either—you might have forgotten how great parks can be if only because people don't visit them often enough anymore (try finding one near where most people live!).

Travel while you can.

If you're single, traveling is an easy way to get away from your daily routine. It can be a great way to meet new people and learn about different cultures. The only drawback is that it's not always feasible for everyone, especially if you have a busy work schedule or other obligations that keep you tied down at home. If this sounds like something that would appeal to you, consider planning a trip in the coming months. You don't need much time off—a weekend will do just fine!

Reclaim time for yourself and use it wisely when you don't have a partner or kids around all the time.

When you're single, you have the time to do what you want when you want: sleep in, work out, watch TV and Netflix, go shopping or travel. This can be great because it gives us a chance to get back in touch with our own selves. We can spend more time doing things we love or just taking care of ourselves.

However, this freedom comes at a cost when your mindset is off or when life gets too busy and hectic. Many people find themselves making poor decisions about how they use their free time and end up feeling worse about themselves than before because they wasted it on something that didn't bring them any joy or satisfaction at all.

The key is to work hard during the week so that by the weekend all you have left ahead of you are good times! So make sure those "good times" are really worth it!

I know it can seem scary to think about being single, but the truth is that it's a great time for you to learn about yourself and become more self-sufficient. In many ways, being single is an opportunity to be happy and whole on your own before you settle down with someone else. So take advantage of this stage in your life and don't let negative thoughts get in the way!
