Growing older can bring its own set of challenges. For me, it was my smile. At 45, I felt self-conscious about my teeth, believing they didn’t reflect the joy inside me. This concern went beyond looks; it started to overshadow my spiritual focus. I had to confront a harsh truth: the enemy was trying to divert my attention from my faith. Instead of focusing on my spiritual growth, I was fixated on my appearance.
Deciding to get braces was a choice about more than teeth; it was a moment of renewal for my self-image and faith. In this post, I’ll share my journey of embracing this change and how it fueled my spiritual growth.
The Battle Within
Reflecting on 1 Peter 3:3-4, which states, "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment… but should be that of your inner self," I recognized that my struggle went deeper than looks. For years, I linked my worth to my appearance. Each smile felt weighed down by insecurity, as if the whispers of "not good enough" were always lurking nearby.
The enemy thrives on these moments of doubt, steering us away from our true identities in Christ. The decision to get braces was an act of faith. Instead of hiding behind my insecurities, I decided to confront them directly.
Surrendering to God
Getting braces forced me to surrender not only my doubts but also my focus. Philippians 4:8 advises us to think on what is true and admirable. This scripture became my mantra, helping me shift my perspective from negative thoughts about my appearance to the truths about my identity in Christ.
Each orthodontist visit was more than just a treatment; it was a step toward healing my heart as well. In the waiting room, I practiced gratitude. I focused on my life’s blessings like my supportive family and friends rather than the perceived imperfections.
Finding Joy in Change
Adjusting to braces wasn’t easy. The first few weeks were uncomfortable, and I often felt like everyone was staring at my teeth. It felt like my flaws were highlighted. Yet, just as Isaiah 40:31 encourages, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength,” I chose to place my hope in God during this journey.
Through prayer and reflection, I learned to embrace this change. I started viewing my braces as a stepping stone to a better version of myself. Each adjustment caused discomfort but also reminded me of the transformation happening within me.
With each visit, my smile was changing, and so was my mindset. I began to see beauty in my vulnerability and strength in the act of changing.

A Renewed Confidence
As my teeth straightened, so did my confidence. My braces symbolized my journey—an outward representation of the inner work God was doing in my life. Psalm 139:14 tells us, "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." I started embodying this truth.
No longer did I feel burdened by fear or self-doubt. I discovered joy in sharing my faith through my smile. It was uplifting to be vulnerable and open about my journey with others.
Strengthening My Faith Community
As I embraced my change, I discovered I wasn’t alone. Talking about my decision with friends and church members opened up discussions about insecurities we all face. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages us to spur one another on toward love and good deeds, highlighting the importance of community.
Through sharing, I connected with others who had similar struggles. Together, we prayed and encouraged one another, celebrating our transformations.
A Testament of Transformation
Choosing to get braces at 45 was an awakening for me. This was more than a cosmetic decision; it was a declaration of faith and a commitment to embrace transformation. I surrendered my insecurities, changed my focus, and found renewed confidence rooted in my identity as a child of God.
In 2 Corinthians 5:17, we learn that “if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come.” This transformation isn’t just spiritual; it can be seen in our choices and lives.
My journey shows that it’s never too late to embrace change, to work on yourself, and to draw closer to God. Whether it’s through braces or another form of growth, let it reflect the beauty within you. Embrace your journey and trust that God is continually guiding you toward wholeness and completeness.
By embracing change, I am not only transforming my smile but also deepening my faith and strengthening my confidence. It’s a powerful reminder that, in every season of life, God is at work, guiding us toward wholeness and fulfillment.
